BOBBY BARE ? FRIENDS 1986 U.S. TV SHOW
(with CARL PERKINS, JOHNNY CASH, BOBBY
BARE ? PAUL MCCARTNEY 1986/1993)
Bobby's guests Carl Perkins and Johnny
Cash reminisce about the early days of Sun Records, Sam Phillips, The Beatles
and the birth of rock n roll.
Johnny discusses his roots, influences
and what he's been through in his career. Carl discusses meeting the Beatles
in 1964 and how George Harrison once changed his name to Carl Harrison.
Great story of how Paul McCartney invited Carl to join the "Tug Of War"
sessions. Plus great live versions many songs!
CARL PERKINS DOCUMENTARY (1998, recorded
1993)
U.S. documentary. An excellent tribute
to Mr. Carl Lee Perkins! Rock n roll founding father Carl Perkins left
the Tennessee cotton fields, melded gospel, bluegrass, hillbilly, country,
and rock n roll and became one of the most influential figures of popular
music. In 1993, he and Paul McCartney, who with the Beatles recorded seven
Perkins tunes, reminisced and jammed backstage at Memphis' Liberty Bowl.
Carl and Paul jam and share entertaining stories and Carl discuses the
inspiration for many of his songs. Carl is the King of Rockabilly!
SPECIAL BONUS TRACKS:

Description
This television special, taped in 1971
at Danmarks Radio's TV-Byen studios, features Johnny Cash with June Carter,
The Carter Family, Carl Perkins and The Statler Brothers, and accompanied
by The Tennessee Three. They passionately sing a number of songs with "Man
In Black" and "Children Go Where I Send Thee" as wonderful highlights.
Funnily, Cash introduces one song in Danish
by reading from a piece of paper, which comes out surprisingly good, then
later apparently mistakes Denmark for Sweden.

"After recording several albums, a very
strong desire of my heart has been to do a live album at my local church,
with home people. Because I believe Jesus is bringing us all back to a
local church. My brother, Johnny Cash, agreed to come to Kernersville,
NC, and join me in doing this live album. If I may quote his words, 'I've
enjoyed doing this album with you more than anything I've ever done.' Thanks,
John, me too! A special thanks for Faith Assembly of God and to my pastor,
Rev. Roger and Lori Loomis and to our 28-voice choir, and especially to
my husband, Dr. Harry Yates. Take it home with you and listen to the songs
we all grew up on, plus some new ones. I know you'll love it, too!" --

RAINBOW QUEST (SHOW ONE)
Pete Pete Seeger opening medley /

eyes (June Carter)
When musician Pete Seeger launched his
RAINBOW QUEST television show in the 1960s, he invited a dizzying array
of musical guests to liven up the proceedings. Among them were Johnny Cash
(alongside his wife, June Carter), and legendary country star Roscoe Holcombe.
This release sees them performing and talking about their art, offering
valuable insight into their working methods and personal lifestyles.
Rainbow Quest was a TV series hosted by
Pete Seeger and filmed in the mid 1960s when folk music had enormous popularity.
One show on this volume features Johnny Cash with his wife June Carter
Cash reminiscing about his early influences and singing many early country
ballads. The other show features Roscoe Holcombe, a banjo/guitar player
from Hazard, Kentucky. The intensity he brings to traditional performance
led Eric Clapton to call him "his favorite country musician."
Watching this DVD is like entering a time
capsule. Johnny Cash is visibly high on something or the other, unable
to sit still or to stop smoking... June Carter is wonderful. Roscoe Holcomb
is reticent in the extreme. There are a couple of great a cappella performances
by Jean Redpath. Pete Seeger was only in his 40s when this unusual series
was recorded (and barred at the time from network television). He is clearly
not as comfortable in front of a TV camera as he generally is in front
of a live audience, but that's part of this series' innocent charm: he
loses himself in song, but finds it awkward to make small talk on a minimalist
set. The Rainbow Quest series has been unavailable in any form for many
years, and it's great to have it on DVD. Let's hope Shanachie is kind enough
to release the entire series on DVD. This is a treasure that deserves to
be shared.

COMMENT:
Here are two early TV shows with Johnny
Cash. The Star Route is absolutely pristine mint. It comes from a
film chained 16mm print to a 3/4" tape to a high quality Super Beta 2 tape.
The Barn Dance is farther along down the generation line but is in color.
The color is a little off at times, Johnny looks a little green. Not perfect
but worth while. Tracking is good on both of these as they were recorded
from an industrial Beta machine. The Star Route has Johnny singing 6 songs
in a half hour show, he does 3 on Barn Dance. Great stuff.
This is very unic material.

COMMENT:
Personal Notes: this is from Dime some
time ago. Video and audio quality are pretty good. Unfortunately the dvd
was authored without menu or chapters.
It's a typically TV Christmas family show,
so quite mainstream oriented, with a few parts that are quite (too) soppy
IMO, but it's worth having for some very
nice moments: not only some of Cash's
interpretations, but the duet with Roy Clark reaches some high peaks, not
to mention Jerry Lee Lewis' two songs.
Another freebie Christmas in music, with
the great Johnny Cash.
