HET UUR VAN DE WOLF
Johnny Cash in Folsom Prison, January 13th, 1968
FMT-LTE11DVD
UK COMMENT:
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison explores the historical context of Johnny Cash's seminal concert album, "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison." Based on writer Michael Streissguth's acclaimed book Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: The Making of a Masterpiece, the program weaves compelling interviews with archival photography – enhanced for broadcast by "extrapolation technique" – to evoke the spirit of that momentous day on Jan. 13, 1968 when Johnny Cash appeared on stage at Folsom Prison. Participants include Rosanne Cash, band member Marty Stuart, and relatives of inmate/singer Glen Sherley, who famously wrote "Greystone Chapel" for Cash.

HIS COMPLETE LIFE STORY
CMT Inside Fame 2003
The film will cover Cash's life from the farm all the way to his early Sun Records career, and will take a look at his troubled times in the '60s. However, Memphis (where Cash spent a great deal of his time) is not a lock to see the film shot there, as Louisana is also bidding to be the film's location.

the best film of 2005, 4 September 2005
Author: Jim Hemphill (sjhemphill@msn.com) from Los Angeles, CA
I've long thought that James Mangold was one of the most underrated American directors; while other acclaimed auteurs like Wes Anderson and David Gordon Green have made names for themselves by essentially repeating themselves with each film, Mangold has attracted considerably less attention for actually having the gall to show some range. Like the great directors of the Hollywood studio system, Mangold shows visual and narrative skill across a wide array of genres: character-driven crime (COPLAND); horror (IDENTITY); issue-oriented drama (GIRL INTERRUPTED), etc. What each of these films shares in common is a stunningly elegant and expressive visual style, an attention to character reminiscent of Renoir, and an economy of storytelling that would make Howard Hawks envious.

Now Mangold has delivered his masterpiece, and it's the best studio release I've seen so far this year. WALK THE LINE, Mangold's story of the relationship between Johnny Cash and June Carter, is deliriously romantic, exhiliratingly entertaining (as a musical it invites and earns comparison with the best of Vincente Minelli), and profoundly moving--all set to a spectacular soundtrack. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are both brilliant as Cash and Carter, but not only in the ways you would expect. Their most impressive achievement is to convincingly portray two people falling in love in a manner that's sincere and sweet but never cheaply sentimental. This is the most unabashedly romantic American movie since THE NOTEBOOK, but it's totally authentic and lacking in melodrama; the subtlety with which Mangold and his performers delineate the one step forward, two steps back nature of Cash and Carter's love affair is staggering. Phoenix is particularly brilliant, not only in the romantic scenes but in moments in which Cash discusses his brother's early death; in these scenes the major tragedies of both the character and the performer's lives merge in a way that is heartbreakingly real. And the movie gets across the intoxicating nature of creative collaboration between two people in love better than any film I've ever seen--perhaps no coincidence given that Mangold and his closest collaborator, producer Cathy Konrad, are married. I could (and will) go on about this movie for hours, but let's just say that it's the movie to beat for the rest of the year.

THE LAST GREAT AMERICAN (MPG VIDEO)
BBC Manchester Broadcast, Feb 27e, 2004
This extraordinary and affecting documentary covers everything from Cash?s childhood roots to his early Sun recording sessions to his drug-fueled days as a hell-raising outlaw to his commercial rise and fall and finally to his stunning rebirth as an elderly troubadour contemplating his own mortality.

The Man In Black would have been 73 this year and, had he survived, likely still working on a career that spanned four decades of American popular music. Johnny Cash sang with Elvis in the 1950s, Dylan in the 1960s, and Bono in the 1990s, then was discovered by yet another generation of fans through his work with Def Jam founder and producer Rick Rubin in the last decade of his life. He was a complex country singer bold enough to oppose the Vietnam War and caring enough to play concerts for soldiers in the field. Rare early footage of him on stage imitating Elvis reveals a seldom seen humorous side, and touching interviews with family members and fellow musicians like Roseanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, and Elvis Costello complete the portrait.

RIDIN'THE RAILS
(See Soundtrack at Tape)
Johnny Cash impresses as 'on the spot' commentator in this light but very well done history of the American rail system. Dressed in variations on his black shirt and pants (southern gent, cowboy, etc) he fits naturally into every recreated (with great detail) scene like some sort of time-traveling reporter/raconteur/singer. He sings several songs all the way through, and gives us tantalizing tidbits of songs you never thought to hear him try like 'Buddy Can You Spare a Dime?' He was in his musical prime and his voice is warmer in tone on this documentary than it often sounds on record. He has such a compelling physical presence as he tells his railroad stories that one wishes he had done a lot more of this sort of thing. The imagery and color in the film are also very good.

TRENT REZNOR COMMENT ON COVERING 'HURT'
Johnny Cash did a stark cover of this song with a striking video. In the video, the 71-year old Cash appears very fragile as he sings this from his home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Cash wore no makeup, ? there was no attempt to make him look younger. Trent Reznor was very impressed by Cash's take on his song ? quite moved by the video (The Video)
