COMMENT:
There is some cassette hiss, most notieable during the quiet Carter Family tunes.
The "request written on the stage" referred to by John leading into I Still Miss Someone,
was written by myself on a paper napkin -  I wrote "Please play Let Him Roll" .... and he did June, Anita, Helen and John Carter Cash appear on more tunes (towards the end of the show) than indicated ... songs are shown as "with June Carter" when June is more-or-less duetting, on other tunes she's sharing backing vocals.

COMMENT:
There is some cassette hiss, most notieable during the quiet Carter Family tunes.
June, Anita, Helen and John Carter Cash appear on more tunes (towards the end of the show) than indicated ... songs are shown as "with June Carter" when June is more-or-less duetting, on other tunes she's sharing backing vocals.
There were some major recording level adjustments in the first 30 seconds of the original cassette, these have been slightly smoothed on the final CD. I considered patching in the equivalent section from the early show on the same date, but in the end decided against it.
The volume level was increased for the Carter Family section, to make the CD generally more consistent in volume. A tiny section of audience applause prior to Ghost Riders was increased in volume in order to make the transition less noticeable where the original cassette flip had occurred. No other editing or repairs, other than these volume adjustments, was made in CEP.
The introducer's comments prior to d1t15 are clipped on the original cassettes, probably because he was stood away from the microphone, or the mic was not switched on. (It sounds like a flaw in mastering, but is not!).

COMMENT:
Info: This is an excellent audio torrent, in quality and in the uniqueness of content. A real gem for JC fans. From info picked from the announce thread on Dime, it seems that the first show was from 1956 and not 1958 as first described.
A guy made some research and found out that JC had performed live on Country Style USA in 1956, also in Get Rhythm "...JC says it's their LATEST RELEASE from SUN...it was released on April 2, 1956, as the B side to the single...I Walk the Line"
Seems like this is better than any other early recording that exists.

One of the Dime comments: THIS IS PRICELESS, so priceless, very few AVERAGE DOWNLOADERS/Collectors, actually realize, what a GEM this is. Hardcore fans should know. Those pesky bootleggers SHOULD KNOW

These are vintage radio broadcast transcription discs (at times you can “hear” the vinyl which adds flavor). The sound quality is amazing.

COMMENT FROM EMO'S AUSTIN PAGE:
Johnny Cash once played a SXSW gig there that they're still talking about.
We were even lucky enough to have the legendary, immortal man in black, Johnny Cash, play a set on one of our stages back in 1994, and you can still see the barstool on which he planted his ass hanging from the ceiling.
..........................................................................................
Austin Convention Center and EMO s, Austin, Texas.
Johnny Cash delivers the keynote speech at the South by Southwest conference. At 10.30am he is introduced by co-directors Roland Swenson and Louis Meyers and Opens with Delias Gone a track from his forthcoming album American Recordings.
Ive always known that when I had to make a speech it would be good if I had my guitar handy to fall back on he joked.
During his speech he also performs Tennessee Stud, Drive On and The Man Who Couldnt Cry. Before he left the stage, Austin City mayor Max Nofziger proclaimed the day Johnny Cash Day and presented him with the key to the city. In the evening he played a show at EMOs, a grungy, partly open-air club that holds around 500 people.
Hundreds of people were turned away. Both the keynote speech and his evening show were filmed and broadcast.

Kathy Marcus ? John T. Kunz, Waterloo Records
The hot ticket in the Spring of '94 was Johnny Cash at Emo's. The appearance coin-
cided with Rick Rubin's debut production of Cash's American release. It was set up
to bring Johnny to the Gen-X's and the alternative rock audience, as well as to the
music industry. Emo's was packed as the crowd was all cowboy hats and tattoos.
Johnny played a nervous yet confident acoustic set and felt totally comfortable with
the crowd. It was magic. At the end of the show we hurried backstage to get a quick
picture with Johnny.

COMMENT:
This is the mono soundtrack of a 1982 TV show, a little on the "bassy" side and certainly not flawless, but a "must have" if only for Steve Goodman's and John Prine's ultimate stereotype country song "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" (and Steve's vocal "steel guitar solo"). Steve also performs his "City Of New Orleans" and John Prine his "Paradise". Rodney Crowell, Johnny's son-in-law at that time (and introduced as such) performs two of his songs.

COMMENT:
Probably taped from radio.
Tracks 1-10 recorded May 21, 1955 in West memphis, Arkansas.
All tracks has been previously released on Limited Edition of The legend Box set 2005.

Alright, aside from the Landsburg Barbarians recordings or anything he recorded in the Air Force, this is easily the Holy grail of early Johnny Cash. What we have here is the first ever recording of John and his band, the Tennessee Two. John was to appear on KWEM in August of 1954 after getting sponsored by where he worked, Home Equipment Company. Before he went, he has Vivian get the tape recorder, and had her tape the show for memories. I guess John would've never guessed how much this show means to people. First, theirs a ad for a TV and then the guy finally introduces Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two. What happens is the first instrumental by Luther, he does Cry Cry Cry as a instrumental, so very early for them to do that. Then John talks some, and then he does a song that was one of the first demos he did for Sun, Wide Open Road. Its a fantastic version, very good. John advertises where he works, then he does a VERY early version of One More Ride, and its just fantastic, it has solo's in it, which it sure isn't known to have. Then John advertises his job again, then talks about Luther, and then Luther goes into a instrumental which I'm certain inspired the song Luther Played the Boogie, very good, yet short. Then John says hes gonna do a song that he just recently wrote, called Belshazzar. Its very amazing, since the song wasn't recorded in Sun until Summer of 1957. Sadly, the show is now over, and its the Cry Cry Cry instrumental again. But, it comes with a bonus, a 1955 ad for a concert at the Overton Park, very amazing. Overall, A++++++++++++++, would listen to more. It seems like more were recorded by John as well, since it sounds like the bonus 1955 ad is from one of the tape recordings as well.

COMMENT:
Unfortunately, the quality is not quite as good as that of the Apr 19, 1981 Rotterdam show (especially when using earphones, one can hear the microphone being moved occasionally, the sound is somewhat "tinny" in comparison to Rotterdam), but I'd still label it a solid VG, though.
And, compared to the Rotterdam show, the setlist, Johnny Cash trying to speak German throughout the show, etc. certainly more than compensates for the slightly inferior quality.
IMO, this is a show that should be released in its entirety from the soundboard master tapes recorded that night (I'd be the first to buy it), not just the few tracks (little over 40 minutes, only from the second half, and out of order) that appeared on the long OOP (or at least extremely hard to get) "Survivors" disc!

THE COMPLETE MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET (VERSION 2)
With CARL PERKINS, ELVIS PRESLEY, JERRY LEE LEWIS
RECORDED: SUN Studio, Memphis, Dec, 14th, 1956
Just a Little Walk With Jesus / Walk That Lonesome Valley / I Shall Not Be Moved / Peace in the Valley / Down by the Riverside / I'm With the Crowd But Oh So Alone / Farther Along / Blessed Jesus (Hold My Hand) / As We Travel Along the Jericho Road / I Just Can't Make It by Myself / Little Cabin on the Hill / Summertime Has Passed and Gone / I Hear a Sweet Voice Calling / And Now Sweetheart / You've Done Me Wrong / Keeper of the Key / Crazy Arms / Don't Forbid Me

THE MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET: Carl Perkins (guitar) / Johnny Cash (vocals, guitar) /
Elvis Presley / Jerry Lee Lewis (vocals, piano).
It has been said that it's not really a quartet because Johnny Cash wasn't caught on tape but Johnny Cash states in his autobiography that he was there, he is singing, he is on the tape but because he had to sing in a different key to keep up with Elvis his voice is not recognised.
But regardless Elvis, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were there -- and this was the first time Elvis met Jerry Lee, who was at the time just the pianist on Carl's session. At this point in time, Elvis was already recording for RCA -- so it was quite a treat to have him drop by the Sun Studios.
One of the highlights of the tape is Elvis telling the others about seeing one of Wards Dominoes (in fact it was Jackie Wilson) imitating him in Las Vegas. Elvis then imitates Jackie Wilson imitating him! Elvis also sings a version of Paralized (a song he had already recorded) in the style of Wilson -- and it is much better than the real recording!

Cash and the whole late 1960's show in concert in England. Exact date unknown.. what was produced a wonder LIVE gospel show. This was done to promote Cash's THE HOLY LAND lp which had just been released. I believe June Carter Cash is missing as John Carter was either dur to be born or had arrived.  Mother Mabel carter fills in.. a wonderful document of a performance by one of the First Family of Country Music!

COMMENT:
Johnny Western, who emceed this 1961 show, would later become part of Johnny Cash’s band.  Roger Miller, who had already written hits for Faron Young, Ray Price, Ernest Tubb, Jim Reeves, and George Jones, was just getting started as a performing artist.  Fiddler Gordon Terry joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1950 and played with Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys.  His biggest single, “Wild Honey”, charted in 1957.  Claude Gray’s career was hot in 1961:  "I'll Just Have a Cup of Coffee (Then I'll Go)," was a crossover pop hit at that time.  George Jones, still basking here in the glow of his 1959 hit “White Lightnin’”, would soon
move away from his honky-tonk, rebel image:  His smooth ballad “Tender Years” was Number One for seven weeks later in 1961. Rose Maddox (formerly of the fantastic hillbilly band Maddox Brothers and Rose) had five Top 20 hits in that year, including both sides of the 45 “Kissing my Pillow” and “I Want to Live Again”, which are performed here.  Finally, Johnny Cash performs his hits, including “Luther’s Boogie”, which, interestingly, was the highest charter of all of them.
