COMMENT DVD ONE:
JAMES PAUL McCARTNEY - 1973
While under appreciated by critics at the
time of it’s broadcast; James Paul McCartney remains a unique time capsule.
The special featured most of Wings singles to date along with tracks from
the new Wings LP Red Rose Speedway. Also included were previews of “Live
and Let Die” and “Bluebird” as well as classic Beatles songs. Commissioned
by music publisher and head of ATV Sir Lew Grade, the program came about
as a compromise between Grade and McCartney over songwriting disputes.
Sir Grade challenged McCartney’s use of wife Linda’s name as co-writer
on the LP’s Ram and Wild Life along with most of the singles through the
end of 1972. As a resolution, Paul agreed to videotape the special for
ATV, with him retaining total creative control. The special was produced
and directed by Gary Smith and Dwight Hemion. This team was responsible
for “ELVIS”, the 1968 Comeback Special. With its’ blend of live performances,
promos and skits, James Paul McCartney is a unique Television program worthy
of revisiting. This remastered version belongs in every McCartney fans’
collection. John later remarked, “I liked parts of Paul’s TV special, especially
the intro. The bit filmed in Liverpool made me squirm a bit, but Paul’s
a pro. He always has been.”
For this definitive edition, we have used
a previously unreleased source tape and restored the special using the
finest audio and visual elements available. This extra effort results in
the best presentation of James Paul McCartney to date.
BONUS TRACKS:
Blackbird/Bluebird/Michelle/Heart Of The
Country – 2006 remaster, acoustic medley re-synchronized to the original
raw audio source.
Hi, Hi, Hi – Not included in US airings of
the special, taped live from ATV Studios
ONE HAND CLAPPING - 1974
With Band On The Run still riding high in
the charts, Paul assembled a new lineup for Wings in 1974. He took the
band to Nashville in June for a working holiday. The six-week stay resulted
in the first new Wings single in several months; “Junior’s Farm/Sally G”
was released in November. Wings also worked on several Cold Cuts that Paul
stated would be issued after the next proper Wings LP. Pleased with the
new lineup, Paul and Wings gathered at EMI’s Studio Two in August to rehearse
and record old and new material. MPL videotaped the events with the intent
of producing a Television special. Geoff Emerick recorded the sessions
for possible commercial release. A tour was also under consideration. The
sessions took place over four days in late August with almost forty hours
of videotape shot. Directed by David Litchfield, the idea was to shoot
on videotape and then edit and transfer the selected footage onto film.
Frank Zappa’s film 200 Motels inspired this technique. The film was named
One Hand Clapping, and is an interesting Wings documentary. The film takes
the viewer right inside Studio 2 as Wings rehearse, record and share their
thoughts. The film also gave each Wings member their own spotlight section;
Paul’s being a rare piano medley that included several songs never heard
before or since. In early1975, during the Venus And Mars sessions, overdubs
for the films finale “Baby Face” were recorded in New Orleans. In spite
of the effort put into the project, One Hand Clapping remains unreleased
to this day.
Picture Perfect is extremely pleased to present
One Hand Clapping in incredible quality. For this edition, we have uncovered
an amazing 35mm film print buried in the archives. This discovery far surpasses
all previous 16mm reductions of this material. The audio has been taken
directly from the original Nagras to produce this definitive edition. Apparently
the transfer from video to film produced less than optimal results and
may very well be a reason the project was scrapped. Short film excerpts
from the finished print have appeared over the years, but no evidence exist
that the original videotapes have survived.

COMMENT DVD TWO
WINGS FLY SOUTH – 1975
The year 1974 ended with the release of “Junior’s
Farm” in November and work began on the first new LP in over 12 months
at Abbey Road Studios. In January 1975 Wings traveled to New Orleans. Paul
stated, “to achieve an even greater flexibility with the blues-rock sound”.
January also saw The Wings line-up change once again with the addition
of Joe English on drums. The new LP Venus And Mars along with the single
“Listen To What The Man Said” were released in May. These were the first
records not released on the Apple label and were distributed with the MPL
logo instead. These were the first releases credited solely to Wings, dropping
the ‘Paul McCartney And’. With a new line-up and LP, it was time to rehearse
for the first Wings concerts in over two years. This would be no ordinary
Wings tour, but a full fledged World Tour beginning with Britain and Australia
September 9 – November 14.
The demand to see Wings perform in Australia
was enormous. The two Melbourne concerts scheduled at the Myer Music Bowl
were quick sell-outs. Due to overwhelming ticket demand, the November 13th
concert was videotaped and dedicated to “all the people who couldn’t get
to see us”. Two days earlier, Paul was informed that he and his wife Linda
were banned from entering Japan for a series of concerts at the Budokan
Hall. Then he requested a copy of the concert be sent to Japan to compensate
disappointed fans. It should also be noted, that MPL documented the entire
tour. Several hours of candid and concert footage were captured on film.
The concert was also professionally recorded and mixed from 16-track tape
for possible commercial release.
The Australian and Japanese TV broadcasts
were not the complete concert. They were edited down to under an hour each,
and both were subjected to heavy post-production. The version for Japan
added subtitles and removed nearly all in-between talk. Extra crowd noise
was added to cover crude edits and references to Australia. The edited
Japan TV version has been available to collectors for over 20 years. The
original unedited videotape was not unearthed until 1995. The master does
not contain the annoying subtitles that plague previous issues. * The discovery
of this tape was quite astounding and provides us with the only complete
Wings concert from this period. The 1975 concerts were very exciting as
the tour was fresh and the band was in great sprits. Not as polished and
scripted as the 1976 tour, the band appears quite relaxed and spontaneously
chat it up with the audience.
Picture Perfect is presenting Wings Fly South
from the original open-reel videotape. This is the complete multi-camera
shot concert from tuning to end. A complete track-by-track remastering
was required to compensate for imperfections in the original source tape.
While rediscovering the original videotape was like finding buried treasure,
decades of improper storage rendered sections of the tape damaged. We have
acquired a safety copy made directly from the original Pal master and reproduced
an incredible transfer. Utilizing this transfer as the starting point,
we then located all the audio and visual elements available. ATU productions
have replaced the audio/visual glitches from the damaged portions of the
concert. We proudly present the most complete and enjoyable version to
date. Twenty of the songs are being presented with the remix from 16-track.
This presentation is a revelation, seeing the entire show restored like
never before!

Additional comments:
DVD-Video featuring some very rare footage:
the rehearsals for the Paul McCartney set at the Prince's Trust 10th Anniversay
Birthday concert, one day before the actual concert on 20th June 1986.
In 1986, Paul McCartney joined Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, Elton John,
Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Phil Collins, Paul Young and others at the Prince's
Trust 10th Anniversary Birthday Concert. The story goes, according to Paul,
that when he was getting ready to prepare for the event, he thought he'd
have to rearrange some things and possibly sing "Long tall Sally" in the
key of F not G. When he arrived for rehearsals, he didn't dare tell the
blokes to play it a full-step lower. He toughed it out and gave a raucous
rendition of "Long tall Sally" and "I saw her standing there" in their
original key - the same as when he was a mop-top. But now the story takes
a little twist. "Get back" - with incredible energy added from Tina Turner
- was performed in the key of G and not A - a full-step lower. Did Paul
ask that the song be played a full-step lower because of his voice? Or,
did he fear ridicule from his peers for having to play two songs in lower
keys and went ahead and gave it everything singing "Long tall Sally?" We
may never know the answer to that question - and who cares anyway! Paul
is having fun and it's great footage to watch. Also very nice to see is
that Mark Knopfler is on stage all the time and also plays some small solo's
here and there. Filmed by somebody who was actually on the stage, so this
is some really rare material. The sound and picture quality are not too
bad, nice enough to enjoy the recording.

This extended Japanese theater copy was made

The film print presented here was obtained from an employee at Toshiba-EMI
and was copied from a 3/4" master transfer. Unfortunately this was before
VHS HiFi, therefore this is a mono copy.
This is the same film that was presented
on MCP-018, however it is presented here as a new transfer, editing out
the reel change after "Bluebird" (to the best of my limited ability). The
original T-120 ran out after "Hi Hi Hi" so there is an edit there as well.
As "bonus" footage I have added on a 15-minute

COMMENT YELLOW COWE:
Paul recorded the Unplugged TV show at the
'new' Limehouse Television Studios on the 25th January 1991. The
original Limehouse, in London's Isle Of Dogs, was demolished in 1988 during
the building of Canary Wharf. The studio relocated to Wembley (to
the old Lee International Film Studios) in 1989 and the Limehouse name
disappeared in 1992 when it's parent Company, Trilion, went out of business.
The facility is now known as Fountain Studios. The subsequent
'highlights' album and CD from the recording, mixed by Geoff Emerick, were
initially released in an edition of "less than a million worldwide" and
then rereleased some years later. The show was a massive hit with
critics and the fans and transformed MTV's 'Unplugged' format into a household
name with Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Aerosmith, George Michael and Nirvana
(amongst others) later recording sessions for the show.
The CD and album releases of 'The Official
Bootleg Recording' featured only 17 tracks, not compiled in order of performance.
The TV broadcast version was also 17 tracks but favoured 'Things We Said
Today' over 'Hi Heel Sneakers' for inclusion. In addition to the
album, a further three tracks: 'Mean Woman Blues', 'Midnight Special' &
'Things We Said Today' were officially released on the 1993 promotional
CD for 'Biker Like An Icon' (beware of fakes if you seek this out for your
collection). To date the only officially released video footage from
the show are new cropped widescreen edits of 'I Lost My Little Girl', 'Every
Night', 'And I Love Her' & 'That Would Be Something' on 2007's 'The
McCartney Years' DVD set.
The show was recorded in under two and a
half hours (including breaks) and, with a couple of small exceptions, the
versions on the official releases and broadcast were done in one take.
The tracks that didn't make an official release
are;
Intro (spoken)
Matchbox
The Fool
We Can Work It Out (takes 2 and 3)*
Ain't No Sunshine (take 2, and 52 seconds
of take 1)**
*The version on the official releases is a
composite edit of take 1 (count in only), take 4 (except the last chord)
and take 3 (the last chord and audience reaction).
**The version on the official releases is
take 1 with two 26-second segments removed.
With the exception of the full unedited take
1 of 'Ain't No Sunshine', stereo outtakes of all the omitted music (and
most of the between-song chat) have surfaced on bootlegs, and in 2004 a
video transfer of the complete performance (with a sub-standard, heavily
compressed mono soundtrack) started to circulate. This Yellow Cow DVD features
this complete performance footage with a new pristine, full-resolution
stereo soundtrack. Only take 1 of 'Ain't No Sunshine' has been carefully
patched with 52 seconds of mono sound, and some periods of chat between
songs.
The bonus interview footage was shot as part
of an 'Unplugged' promotional press junket at Westcliff-on-Sea, 19th July
1991, and was cut into the Japanese TV broadcast in five segments.
Paul talks about the 'Unplugged' album release, bootlegs and bootlegging,
and the short 1991 'acoustic' tour.
So, 18 years after the show took place we
now have the full performance in glorious stereo brought to you from the
nice people at Yellow Cow. If you haven't watched or listened to
'Unplugged' for a while give this DVD a spin! It was an important
show on the McCartney timeline and, due to the intimate surroundings and
simple delivery of the material, will undoubtedly be looked back on in
years to come as a very special event.

van The Beatles. Op deze manier kwamen er talloze ‘bewijzen’ naar voren
voor de dood van McCartney.
In de documentaire 'Who Buried Paul McCartney?'
Uiteindelijk besloten The Beatles
het liedje te kopen nog voor de media aandacht rond Paul-is-dood. Het is
de enige directe aanwijzing dat The Beatles wel degelijk iets met de geruchten
te maken zouden hebben.

Originally broadcast in 1979 on US TV as
part of the CBS late movie
programming. This DVD was the first Video
Shack title and first attempt
at authoring a DVD. Hence the reason for
the smaller file size. I had
to capture the signal at a lower bit rate
so there wouldn't be any
dropped frames(limitations of my computer
and software application at
the time).
But since this is sourced from the master
VHS from the original broadcast
the quality is still quite exceptional.

X-FACTOR FINAL 2009
Introduction
Drive My Car
Live And Let Die
COMMENT:
Paul McCartney made his X Factor debut tonight
as part of the live final show. Dermot O’Leary almost peed himself as he
introduced the former Beatles singer, personally we weren’t quite so excited.
Paul sang the Beatles classic ‘Drive My Car’
and even though he bobbed way more than was necessary and looked suspiciously
like my dad, we found ourselves really getting into the whole vibe.
Towards the end of the song the final 12
X factor singers joined him on stage, not that you could really hear them.
It seemed like the sound guys had given them all fake microphones, which
in Jedwards case wasn’t such a bad thing. Roadies then descended onto the
stage and pulled out a psychedelic piano for Mr McC and he launched into
a rendition of Live or Let Die. We have always preferred the Gun n Roses
version of this one but actually, Paul really rocked it up tonight. For
an old guy he was really very good. It is starting to
dawn on us why this guy is still famous after so many decades of making
music. You could say that, for us, Paul McCartney has the X Factor.
